What Were THEY Thinking?

Have you ever wondered, “What were they thinking?” when you saw an interior in a Show House or walked into a friend’s house or saw a Celebrity’s home on TV?  I sure have on many occasions…..and some of my thoughts were prompted right out of HGTV!

So, I thought I would share some real “finds” with you that hopefully you will see some reactions as well and also find the humor associated with some of these photo opps.   Many thanks to James Swann and his continuous reminders about GOOD Design and when we need to laugh out loud!

AND then add in some great design photos that make you say “Ah…. That’s more like it!”

Just say NO to way TOO much of a good thing! I guess they liked the wallpaper and couldn’t make another decision? It’s boring, it’s way too much visually, gives brown a bad “rap”, the furniture blends into the scene and IT really makes you want to growl, doesn’t it? (Picture from James Swan’s “101 Things I Hate About Your House”)

And the point here, when is TOO MUCH a good thing? H –E – L – L – O ? (Picture from James Swan’s “101 Things I Hate About Your House”)

Remind you of anyone you know, like a Great Aunt? It does me! (Are you laughing about this Mama?)

My toilet paper solutions….that are quite effective and functional, yet tasteful!

James Swann calls this one Decorating 101….that’s putting it mildly! If you take away all the “stuff”, the room has great possibilities….. Don’t you think?

Would you like this to be your Guest Bedroom? A little hung up on someone’s idea of a artwork or Black and White or WHAT? (Picture from James Swan’s “101 Things I Hate About Your House”)OR would you be more comfortable in this wonderful Guest Bedroom Retreat?

OR would you be more comfortable in this wonderful Guest Bedroom Retreat? (Photo by Jet Kat Design) (and featured in AVALiving last week!)

Would you rather your Master Bath look like this? (Photo from “101 Things I Hate About your House” by James Swann)

Or THIS? (Photo by Jet Kat Design)

THIS Game Room makes me nauseous – TOO busy, TOO cluttered, and TOO over the top. It reminds me of Las Vegas Casinos! (Photo from “101 Things I Hate About your House” by James Swann)

Or find a Game Room that meets up to your expectations…..and a little more “down to Earth”.

Who says BIGGER IS BETTER? I bet this child has nightmares in this Nursery – WOW! There are certain elements in the room that are nice (love the rug), but combined very badly to become a scary place for a child, in my opinion. Even the life sized “man in the moon” has a bit of a frown on his face! (Photo from “101 Things I Hate About your House” by James Swann)

Does this Nursery get your attention? Check out the carpet samples put together for the floor covering! OH MY! Even though this room is much smaller, they took it “over the top” with clutter, “design noise”, and color chaos! PLEASE DON’T.

The Nursery can be such a Happy place…functional, orderly, and tastefully decorated!  And it can be a perfect child’s sanctuary without all of the “stuff”!  AND a bit more realistic, don’t you agree?

I hope you have enjoyed a little fun with the Thumbs Up and Thumbs Down of Interiors in this gallery and have laughed out loud more than just a little bit.  Sometimes, we need to laugh at ourselves and then get back to a more objective view with the “whole picture”.

It is scary what some people think is “tasteful.” I got a headache looking at some of the rooms from James Swann. You are going to have to tell me more about him and his 101 Rooms!
